Esalen

Total Hours: 150.00

This professional training in Esalen Massage and Bodywork provides comprehensive instruction in fundamental massage skills. Esalen Massage is presented as a form of somatic learning and a meditation for both giver and receiver. Supervised hands-on practice sessions are balanced with lectures and demonstrations, movement classes, and experiential exercises in anatomy, grounding, centering, breath awareness, body process, self-care, ethics, and business practices. Special attention will be given to fostering a supportive environment so that learning can easily occur and a blend between technique, intuition, and creativity can be achieved. This training is for students new to bodywork as well as for practitioners seeking to add the Esalen approach to their work.

Many topics will be covered, including the principles of basic contact, developing the art of sensing, giving and receiving, appropriate boundaries and how to hold space, how to work with the whole body/person, and passive joint articulation and stretches as well as opening through movement.

Basic instructional methods include lecture, demonstration and practice. All sessions include shared exercises on massage tables (provided), paired exercises, self awareness training, use of charts, skeleton, handouts, and written documentation on specified massage sessions. The emphasis of this course is on experiential learning based on the material students have learned and observed.

Students can expect to enter the work force as entry-level qualified massage therapists who can give a satisfying, effective, and informed massage session.

Special Note: Students wishing to receive a certificate of completion and who want to use the Esalen name, must pass this class and join the Esalen Massage & Bodywork Association (EMBA). There is a $150 fee for this membership and certificate which is not included in your tuition. This fee is charged by EMBA regardless of where the student takes the class.
